After the agonizing decision to look into breast reconstruction, I was a bit discouraged after speaking with a few Plastic Surgeons in the surrounding area. I never had the degree of comfort I felt was necessary to go through such an arduous process.

My life changed the moment I met Dr. Lester Yen. I found Dr. Yen to be very pleasant, honest, and at the top of his profession. He was knowledgeable and able to explain on my level. He listened and understood my frustrations, as well as my concerns. He explained every procedure, every option, and did not fill me full of false hopes and expectations.

The outcome has been more than I ever could have hoped for or imagined. I can now look at myself in the mirror and see a woman, not the Bride of Frankenstein.

Dr. Yen, has an excellent staff supporting him. Joni, Dr. Yen's surgical nurse, was always diligent, always kind, warm, and had a way of putting you at ease. Joyce, the always smiling, efficient, caring front office personnel and Carol, whose warmth and finishing touches are the ultimate!

Without these four special and gifted people, I would not be the woman I am today. I will always be eternally grateful that I made that office visit.

When someone says you've got breast cancer, fear is the first thing that comes to mind. Then you are consumed with what action you should take. Decisions need to be made. What surgeon, what oncologist, what plastic surgeon if you choose reconstruction. I wish there were a program guide to tell you all the things you need to know. I wish you could shop for these people as you would for a new chair. I consider myself a do-it yourself kind of girl, and so I wanted to do my own homework, and choose the team I thought would suit me best. Not the least of which is the team of Dr. Lester Yen, and his wonderful nurse Joni. When I went to them I was afraid and embarrassed, I have never taken my shirt off in front of anyone but my husband, and here I was faced with any number of people actually measuring and photographing my old, but dear, breasts. Dr. Yen and Joni treated me as an old friend, and the situation became a job that we were all dedicated to. They furnished me with information, discussed options, and when we settled on a plan I knew what was before me, and that through it all they would be there with me.

I am happy to say, they are not only warm and comfortable friends, but as skilled as they are dedicated. My outcome has been praised by family, friends and other doctors! My oncologist repeatedly told me what a fine outcome I had, and told me has the experience to justify his opinion. Once another plastic surgeon saw my breasts and asked me questions, stating he would like to use the same techniques. Mostly though, it has made a difference in my self-esteem. When you go through all the things cancer, surgery, treatment, etc. entails, you could easily lose an essential part of yourself. Through the care I was given by Dr. Yen and Joni, I have come to a whole new phase of my life. A new freedom, (I never have t o wear a bra) and a new sense of self that I could never have had if they hadn't done the wonderful job they did. I thank them from the bottom of my heart, for giving me back my self esteem, for their kindness and for their skill. If I were to give anyone facing the diagnosis of breast cancer advice, I would say, “Don't be afraid, you are in the best hands that you could ever hope for!” They are a shining light in their profession, and a gift to those of us facing a task we would never ask for. When you close your eyes before your surgery, their smiling faces are the last thing you see, and when you open them again with a new life before you, they are there again, smiling and encouraging you that everything will be alright. And guess what? It really will be.
